Speech made at Marshall Park, Charlotte NC, February 15, 2003
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
Baptist peacemakers throughout Canada and the United States are marching today to urge the leaders of both our governments to halt the momentum toward war with Iraq!
The Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America works to build a culture of peace rooted in justice. We bring a witness of Christian discipleship to peacemakers and call Baptists to peacemaking. We stand in solidarity today with all our brothers and sisters who seek peace in the midst of imminent violence.
War will kill, injure and traumatize thousands of innocent men, women and children -- not only in Iraq but also across the world – and even in North America.
Should soldiers die, and our governments spend billions of dollars to fight this war when people in Iraq and the US could be restored to health by spending a fraction of these billions for medicine, food and jobs?
In the name of Jesus the peacemaker, we say “NO!” TO WAR.
